Supping point

The above title is a play on the phrase tipping point, as popularised by best-selling pseudoscience junkie Malcolm Gladwell, and “to sup” as in drink. It indicates that there has been a slow and gradual change related to the drinking of beverages which has, of late, reached the point where what was once an uncommon aberration has become normal practice.

I have recently found myself not objecting to paying £3.00 for a pint of beer. However, this beer must be of good quality.

Maybe it’s became I go to a fair number of gigs and have long objected to paying through the nose for shite beer at venues like the Academy or the Factory Club run bits of the Custard Factory, that when I’m greeted with the opportunity to drink a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale at The Asylum or some fine Purity UBU at Capsule’s bar at Vivid to sup while I enjoy the live audio, I don’t mind paying £3.00 for it.

Context is all, though. It still seems a little off paying that much for tolerable beer in a pub. £2.50 is probably my limit there.

    I do periodically fret about the fact that it doesn’t trouble me tooooo much to pay £3 for a pint nowadays.

    Things go up in price, though. It happens. I have to remind myself of this.

    Also: while we all assumed “Pure Ubu” is some sort of reference to “Pere Ubu”, I am beginning to suspect that it may be some sort of joke about the sheer bleedin’ ubiquity of Purity ales nowadays. You can’t seem to avoid tripping over them in Brum nowadays.

    Purity Ale is the new Tiger Beer, it seems. Along with Barefoot Wines who really are at bloody everything.

    I must say I was very disappointed to discover Pure Ubu was named after their dog rather than the band, although that might just be a marketing spin on a rather niche reference.

    i’m afraid i’m still too used to wetherspoon’s, so paying more than even £2 for a pint sticks in the throat unless i’m in a particularly fine setting…
