On to way to the Sunn 0))) gig tonight a certain track by The Destroyers came over my headphones – The Glass Coffin Burial of Professor Zurinak. I remembered someone telling me a story about their wife as a child being scared out of her tiny gourd by Paul Murphy as he told this tale many years ago and even now she can’t listen to them playing it without getting rather disconcerted. But I couldn’t remember who. Never mind.
After Sunn 0)))’s performance, which was excellent in the way that only a gig which you have to take deadly seriously while appreciating the inherent absurdity can be, I started my walk back to the bus and stumbled upon Little Chris, fresh from the same gig and telling his chum, who’s name I’ve forgotten, as it my way, the story of how his wife, as a child, was scared by Paul Murphy telling the story of The Glass Coffin Burial of Professor Zurinak many years ago and, to this day, still can’t hear that song without getting rather disconcerted.
That, it seemed to me, felt like enough of a story to blog about, especially if I included the video of said song for you to all enjoy. Here it is:
I love this song, but can’t understand *why* Professor Zurinak invented the drug to make his body die. Why? Why would he do that to himself? A poisoning or chemical experiment gone wrong I could understand but not him doing that on purpose.
I think I might lack imagination….
Nicky – I have often wondered the same thing. After a while I settled on the trusty “People are funny sods, ay they”.
I remember some of the earlier live performances of this song at the Town Hall, replete with old’uns in the audience. They’ve since toned down how suddenly and harshly the “LLLLLLLLLET ME OUT~!” kicks in, and my guess as to why would involve the fear of even more heart attacks.
