Birmingham People at Artsfest

Artsfest 2009 - 01

A few friends of mine are involved with Birmingham Photospace, a campaign to get a permanent place in the city dedicated to photography because, to be honest, it’s kinda embarrassing that there isn’t one. It’s early days but they’re starting with a series of one-off events where they turn somewhere into a “Photo Space” for a day. This weekend they’re at Artsfest running a portrait studio for Birmingham’s People where the photos would immediately be printed and displayed in a gallery in the Council House. This project is the baby of Matt Murtagh who’s been a chum since the early Flickrmeet days. I’d volunteered to help but the regular Photospacers were running such a tight operation that I wasn’t really needed (backup volunteer is a role I quite like, to be honest) so I just hung around take photos of Matt taking photos with the TTV Machine.

Here’s the set:

And a couple of my faves:

Artsfest 2009 - 25
We hooked the TTV camera up to the remote flashes and I took a photo of Matt in the studio.

The TTV Machine always gets attention from kids. I gave this mum my card. Hope they like the result.

Matt was planning on doing four people an hour. In the end he did about 90 people in six hours. That’s one person every 4 minutes. If nothing else he’ll have learned how to not be precious about his photography today!

Along with the portraits, video interviews were being made and the whole package will be going online over the next couple of months in the run up to the exhibition at The Drum in December.

And it’s not over. They’re back in Victoria Sqaure on Sunday from 10 to 4. Come along and have your photo taken.

Oh, and here’s mine fresh from the camera before being sent to the printer:
