It may be a sad reflection of the state of the uk workplace that people feel they have to make an effort (and put themselves and others at risk in doing so) to get to work.

I agree - except for one thing. You generalise about 'the UK' - but in Scotland, where I grew up and lived until 7 years ago, it snows and freezes a lot; several months every winter. I very rarely had my school closed or a bus service withdrawn. Even the north of England is different to London, where we have a lot of problems.

I think people get annoyed because the media makes a big deal out of it when it affects London and the south East - but it needs to be remembered that more people live and work in London than in the whole of Scotland. That just takes it back to your point about how it doesn't usually snow very much down here so when it does, it IS a big deal to the people affected.

I just had the misfortune to listen to John Humphreys interview a gentleman called Peter Hendy from Transport for London. The unfortunate Mr Hendy was (I think the term is ) hectored by Humphreys, who made a number of sily statements about how the buses ran through the Blitz and why was the Underground closed when it is underground?

Not being a Londoner myself even I am aware that the Underground does not run exclusively underground. And though I lack the years of journalistic experience of Mr Humphreys it did occur to me that there was bound to be disruption if the train drivers (who I doubt live in expensive swanky central london) cannot make it to work.

Those of us outside of the large conurbations struggle along. There is unlikely to be a gritting lorry pass by my cul-de-sac :) Lets all go out in the snow, have some fun, and forget about the impending meltdown of global capitalism for a couple of days :)

The smiling faces of the kids on the news reports says it all.

I laugh because British people know damn well they can't manage in this weather yet hundreds of thousands still get in their cars and drive to work anyway and make the situation far worse than it need be. People in winter countries don't go to work when they know there will be a bad blizzard. Office will close early to let employees avoid whiteout conditions. Living with a harsh climate teaches you to respect it's power.

The UK need public service announcements that say something along the lines of "If there is couple inches of snow when you get up in the morning and more expected don't be an idiot and drive to work". They should also push employers to be reasonable about this.

If the car drivers would make the smart choice the Buses could still run and your country could still run. But then I guess there is no stopping mad dogs or Englishmen.

Hear hear! One of my best mates in Norwegian and he used to laugh about us being an "and finally" news item in his home country when Birmingham just ground to a halt those few times.

But you're totally right - we're likely not to have too much more snow in the coming years so pointless investing tons of cash in it.

You are so right. I've been going round saying the same thing for the past 2 days. Do people really want to pay for a transport infrastructure that can provide 100% reliability through a once-every-10-years weather event? I doubt it.

I'm in the office. Living just around the corner from work, I am destined to never have a 'snow day'. :-(

I think I will go for a wander with my camera. No chance of getting to work safely in the next hour or so anyway.
