Shellac, Lightning Bolt, Om, Wooden Shjips and Pissed Jeans played ATP’s Release The Bats at the Custard Factory on Saturday night. I blagged a photo pass (actually I just asked Lisa Capsule if I could have one and she said yes) and produced some of what I think are my best gig photos in a long while, if not ever. A combination of really good lighting, there only being three photogs in the pit (and mostly it was just me) but mostly my feeling like crap on a stinky stick meaning I took my time and watched for the moments rather than excitedly snapping away, those three things probably helped.
Anyway, here’s the set and the slideshow, best viewed full screen really:
The first four photos are of Lightning Bolt and to be honest are really just included to prove I tried to photograph Lightning Bolt. They always play in the audience so only those few dozen who make it to the front get a decent view. It’s an interesting effect, both annoying and inspiring. I guess the main thing is it works for them and the noises that came out of that circle implied it was working very well indeed.
Everything else took place on the stage. Here’s some faves:
The gig itself was excellent. I wasn’t too bothered with Wooden Shjips in the context but Pissed Jeans were great, Om were surprisingly suitable (though that may have been my thick head liking the drone) and Shellac were as fantastic as I had hoped. Really tight, really entertaining, really quite scary. Thank you Jenny and Lisa Capsule for bringing them to Birmingham!

Great set of photos, some very evocative of the Halloween theme. The lighting looks especially good on the Woodern Shjips (04 is great)
Great pics Pete… some timeless gems in there… BRAVO!!
Great photos – I’ve put some up on our blog along with some of the fancy dress costumes.
