What makes Obama 'black' is partly a pervasive labelling that isn't about skin tone or ancestry, but about being slightly different to every president so far. But it is also about signalling to the wider population that it's now okay to be slightly different. IN that regard, 'black' could equally be Catholic, Mormon, female, Hispanic, ....
