I has a avatar

A few months back I was invited out for a drink to brainstorm some ideas for this year’s New Generation Arts festival, specifically for some kind of game they wanted to run across the city using “digital technology” and stuff. We spent a good hour or so excitedly rambling crazy ideas out there none of which I could remember afterwards. Today I met up with The Artist Nikki Pugh who’s been asked to run the thing for a similar ideas crunching session. She had some ideas already and instructed me to buy a sort toy in a charity shop that would be my avatar. I liked the sound of this already.

Nikki then turned up with four more avatars of her own and we proceeded to have a high-level, serious conversation whilst waving toys around the Manic Organic cafe for a couple of hours until the snow distracted us. Here’s mine having a nice cup of tea, because he’s representing me:

The Hulk. And yet also Bert from Sesame St. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this was not made by a confused grandmother but in a factory in China for a company name of Wonderfun Ltd. Fantastic.

So, this is to be my representation in the game. We then had to figure out what the game was. And I’m not going to go into any of the details as that’s for Nikki to reveal but, if this works out the way we planned, it’s going to be quite astounding combining toy mutilation, online social networking, role playing, flash mobbing, gang warfare… Okay, do you remember Quickos the blogging hand puppet? Think along those lines, combined with World of Warcraft and a treasure hunt. With an emphasis on needlecraft. And some other stuff.

It’s going to kick ass.

    hi pete and nikki

i’ve been pondering for a while about the whole notion of avatars – especially in terms of second life – but in general – the really human type avatars in second life are spooky – the fluffy toy avatar i like much more – me i’d maybe be a vinegar bottle, pickled onion, saveloy or red brick —- or me
