What’s in the bawwwwxxx?

After singing Skype’s praises the damn thing has gone and confused the fuck out of me tonight. It’s not a critical thing by any stretch. If anything its inconsequentiality makes it even more annoying. While I was away from my machine an “event” happened. This event was connected to Andrew Dubber. Presumably with his involvement his Skype account communicated with mine in some way. Usually when this happens an icon is displayed – a phone meaning “missed phone call” for example, or a speech balloon with some text meaning “instant message”. These obey pretty established rules and norms of internet communication and telephony. So what, in the name of all the little monkeys, am I to make of this?

In the world of chummy social networking this would mean he’s sent me a present. But I wasn’t aware you could send “presents” through Skype. And clicking on it does nothing except try to call him (even though he’s offline). Hovering does nothing. And a search of Skype’s help says nothing about icons. Or presents for that matter.

WTF SkypeIn?

  1. steve says:

I’d guess its his birthday, especially if the event happened around midnight.

Actually, you’re right. I do believe it is.

    (Searches for “birthday”)

Why am I getting birthday reminders in Skype for all my contacts?

We know it’s hard to remember all your friend’s birthdays so we decided to make it easier for you. If your friend has entered their date of birth in their Skype profile you’ll see a birthday reminder in Skype on the day of their birthday.

    Well blow me down.

  3. It’s my birthday, but you get the presents (ooh- radio commercial flashback!).
