Perhaps what you're describing in words is where you want to be and the drawing is where (some) folks think you are now? I'm not convinced though.

And having just read your latest post about evangelising, I'm thinking you'd be absolutely ideal for that role in as much as you've been doing it for years from these pages. But do have a fear for the corporatising of the thing. Business Links fwiw, have a very cautious view of the internets what with them being chock full of peodophiles and stalkers, doncha know.

But if the job's going to be done, I'm sure you're the one to do it.

Hey Pete,

This kind of presentation is a great idea! You could set up a little workspace on a desk, with a top-down camera... I'm really tempted to try this next time I give a presentation to an open-minded and forgiving audience!

Be sure to post if you ever use the thing as an aid in a "real" presentation.

Pete.

Whilst I know I'm going to be shot by firing squad for trying to demonstrate a group of blogs which have a mutualistic relationship, the one that comes to mind is my favourite stateside trash read Gawker. Gawker Media (http://gawker.com/) has a number of 'specialist' blogs which feed into one another when the content sees it appropriate - where there's a crossover. So they have their travel blog, gossip blog, car blog, filthy naughty blog, gadget blog, regional blog, blah blah blah, which, depending on the particular 'channel' you're viewing, will include relevant stories from one of the other sister blogs when there is some apparent commonality in the article published. Does this make any sense?

Whilst I'd like to make it clear that none of Pete's blogs resemble Gawker, as Paris Hilton and general bitching are not in the tone of The Ashton's repertoire, I love Gawker because it is hideously carnivorous to the ridiculous and is also a bit canny when it comes to cute feedage to another targeted area within its remit...without the need to click around too much. This example very probably means you having to read through incessant crap that I like to peruse, in order to get an idea of what I am wafflinf on about. Sorry about that and the unintellectual assault, but it's more to do with the method than the content...

Are you all loading your weapons now? The bricks are Edwardian and they look like a good place to get made into a doily, tonight....

I think you've got something mate (and with the concept not just the power-ballpoint).

I'm not sure blogs are the answer to everything, it seems to me that it's human nature to have central points of information - the phone book being about the best example I can think of. For someone who wants all the information about creative activity in Birmingham to have to use smaller interconnected networks to get all the information is perhaps more work that they will be willing to put in - not withstanding the possibility of electronic Chinese Whispers (is there a PC term for that?).

My hunch is that there's a yet to be invented way that this will all work out, but we're not quite there yet.

The hierarchy is more how people might perceive it at the moment - this idea that CIB is the main clearing house of arts/creative news. This is not the reality I want to encourage.

RSS mashing - I'm no too keen on combining feeds for the sake of it. I do think there's room for this but the tools aren't there yet. Once you start applying criteria to parsing the web it becomes a less universal thing. Or something.

Another way of looking at it is I'm already doing this with my blogs. I have 300 feeds coming into my reader which I turn into blogs. Others do the same. It's already happening.

More thought on this is needed though.

Works well as a presentation tool, yes!

On the diagram: are you sure it's a heirarchal system with CiB at the top? What you describe in words is different to the drawing.

Bet you've thought of this oh, years ago, but RSS mashing?
