Take your Ourspace and stuff it

Tessa Jowell is doing an online Q&A about blogging today (a chat is a two way thing and this certainly isn’t two way) and I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Actually, the best course of action is to ignore it, as you would were an accountant to be giving a lecture on fish farming.

It does make you wonder, when the Culture Secretary brands the whole social internet “Ourspace” and expects to be taken seriously, if blogging has jumped the proverbial shark, never to be taken seriously in the public sphere again. But, thankfully, blogging and the social internet is bigger than noobs like Jowell can ever conceive and will survive their misguided attempts to understand, and untimely control, it.

As for blogging codes of conduct, let me put it this way. If your online community needs a code of conduct then by all means implement it. Mine doesn’t and yet I appear to be a blogger. So, with all due respect and a modicum of civility, kindly stop extrapolating your own limited experiences to the wider online-o-sphere and fuck off.
