Neutralise stupid MySpace pages with ease

If you’re on a MySpace page that you really want to read but just can’t stand to look (maybe you can’t even read it) because the person has covered it in flashing gifs and bad coloured text and shit, here’s a handy tip.

You’re using Firefox, right?

Install EditCSS. It’s a handy thing if you ever need to, well, edit CSS but if not don’t worry, it’ll just sit there nice and quiet like.

Go to the MySpace page in question.

Open up the EditCSS sidebar.

Select All.

Delete.

Peace shall reign throughout the kingdom.

(Unless they’ve got three emedded movies running at once – you’ll need AdBlock for that.)

the Zap bookmarklets do much the same job.

Ta for that link – very useful.

It occured to me immedately after writing this that there’s a much simpler solution but I had to rush out. Just turn off the style sheet.

(Firefox on a Mac though it’s bound to be similar on other browsers/platforms)

View > Page Style > No Style.

Although saying that, thanks to MySpace pages having no structure whatsoever this kinda kills them big time. Ah well.

As a fellow Firefox user, I can recommend the Webdeveloper toolbar, which gives you loads more options (disable external images, disable image animations, turn off javascript etc).

Been using the above, as well as Flashblock, for ages now. Makes life much easier.

The easiest way (using Firefox) to do it is by installing Greasemonkey and installing these two scripts:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/997 (removes all css styling) and
    http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3299 (removes all media)

all done automatically – no buttons to press!

    Greasemonkey is at http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/

    Simple!

    Stuart – woooo! Fantastic stuff!

Greasemonkey’s also got some good stuff for last.fm that calculates extra stats and slips them in to the pages without being too obtrusive. I think you can find them at the same website Stuart links to there.
