The Destroyers vs Mitchell and Kenyon
Birmingham Artsfest, September 9th

I’ve been tired now for over a month. I’ve cut my work down to four hours a day (and took Monday off after Artsfest), I’m taking vitamin supplements, I’m eating properly (fruit, fresh veg including broccoli, less bread / pasta) and I’m getting a reasonable amount of sleep.

But I’m still tired, and that makes me irritable which, worst of all, makes me tedious. I don’t like being tedious. I want to stop being tired.

Any tips?

I don’t know if this will be useful to you, but what worked for me was switching off the alarm clock for a while and letting society’s expectation that I should be active at these hours and not others take a running jump. It’s terrible for my social life, but sleeping late and then staying up late, doing my work in the evenings and at night, seems to me to be the way to wake up alert and not spend half the day feeling and acting like a zombie.

    Pete – don’t you think the long-term effects of smoking might have something to do with your health problems?

    Somebody once told me regular exercise helps

    though I’ve never tried it myself

    I think a 6 mile bike ride plus four horus digging probably counts as regular exercise!

    I’m going with the smoking. Been doing a lot of that this summer. Just bought some gum.

    Cut down on the amount of tea you drink, especially late at night.

    Fair point, except that shouldn’t leave me knackered. I’ve proven capable of doing much more that this in recent years. It’s just in the last couple of months it’s been a problem (hence the half days, which haven’t made much difference.)

    I note that you are eating less pasta. Big mistake in my opinion as pasta = fuel. Tour de France cyclists eat pasta like crazy, just to top up their energy levels for the next stage.

    Less pasta means “not eating pasta every day” which I tend to do when busy as it’s easy to prepare. Tomorrow (as I’ve run out of veg) I plan to eat pasta and tuna.

    In other words I have a more balanced diet than normal.

    I was going to mention the tea, but I see I’ve been beaten to it. As I’m sitting here, after ten, with a cup of tea.

    Smoking causes a build up of carbon monoxide in the blood, iirc they cling to red blood cells and reduce the amount of oxygen that can be absorbed or processed or some-such by the cells. Whilst exposure to a large dose of carbon monoxide can be cured by getting out in the fresh air, long term exposure causes long term damage.
