Who the hell does Jeff Dreadnought think he is?

When you give a bad review you expect the band in question to not be too happy about it, but even so…

Answers in a hyperlink? My guess is that he’s an aspiring journo from
    Talke Pits.

It’s a lyric. No-prize to whoever gets the song.

Hope it’s not one of Smut Wally’s…. ;-p

It’s the obsession they seem to have with your use of a bicycle that really turns me against them. Wrong-headed defence of a band you love is bound to lurch beyond the realms of logic, I did it myself in my younger days I’m sure, but transport-based bigotry is surely unforgivable.

They’re just jealous because their arses hurt too much to sit on a saddle.

Oh dear – did I just sink to their level? Darn. I’m not homophobic – honestly! Some of my best friends are gay. Well, when I say “best” friends … we’re not *that* close. More like “chums”, really. Oh, Christ.

    *stops digging*

They obviously didn’t like their “Bad Review”. Some of their comments really take the “Biscuit”. I’ll get my coat…

I think we should all get together, go to their next gig and heckle :)
Are you sure it was 3 computers Pete? Looked to me like they were posting from a mobile phone whilst hanging around at the local bus shelter dreaming of playing to more than 20 people in a pub :) LOL

hilarious comments really, not a valid argument in any of them.

I wasn’t really aware of them before, but in future I’ll steer well clear.

  9. 9 Dave C

Of particular hilarity is when they threaten leagal action for taking pictures at their gig

Wow, just for a moment your blog turned into a local band community message board there. Speaking of which, is there a birmingham bands site, like oxfordbands.com ? If not, you should set one up. Best thing to do with kids is to give them a sandbox to play in ;)

Well done Pete – you’ve defended yourself admirably and with dignity, without stooping to their moronic level.

I’ve long thought that one day I’d get a response like this to a gig review, but so far it hasn’t happened. If it ever does, then I only hope I can deal with it as well as you have.

If I were in a band (and the truth is that I’d love to be if I had any musical talent whatsoever) then I’m sure I’d be nettled by a particularly bad review. But, as you say, it’s one person’s opinion and you can’t be so precious and fragile as to take everything that’s written or said about you to heart. In any case, your criticisms of SL didn’t seem unduly harsh and were accompanied by justificatory comments (having not seen them myself, that is).

Jeremy: As if my magic I’ve just stumbled upon it:
    http://thecommunion.co.uk/forum/index.php

It’s certainly a sandbox. Lots of noise but the signal could be useful. God, I’d forogtten how much I hate forums…

  13. 13 Russ L

I write for said site, and yes – the forum is revolting.

The reviews on there can be worth reading, though. I suppose I would say that.

  14. 14 Pete Ashton

Been having a click through the review and gig listings and there’s a lot of good stuff on there – bit of a metal/rock bias but that’s not a problem.

I think those sorts of forums do have a use – like Jeremy implied they keep all the mess and aggro in one place. It’d be nice if they (communion that is) had a blog or something to filter out the useful stuff though.

  15. 15 Russ L

There’s more than a bit of a bias – it’s designed as and intended to be a site for rock/metal/punk/hardcore/the noisier end of indie.

That isn’t the limit of my own tastes, but that’s what the site is about.

Any bands reading this: it’s Giglisting(at)TheCommunion.co.uk if you want your gigs in the, err, listings.

  16. 16 Pete Ashton

Oh, I meant bias in the sense of a good thing, concentrating on one thing and doing it well. Most of the live music sites I’ve seen try and cover everything and fail miserably at it so in this regard I like bias.

  17. 17 Russ L

Well that’s very kind of you to say. I suppose you have a point, but I do sometimes get frustrated about the limits. I’ve managed to sneak one Britney Spears review onto there, though…

  18. 18 Pete Ashton

Limits work both ways – they let you keep things manageable but they also give you something to kick against. Utopias generally don’t produce good art…

  19. 19 Russ L

    Ah yes, creative tension.

Unfortunately I am (‘ow you Eenglish say) a hack, with no slim-to-nil chances of writing anything worthwhile to begin with. Limits therefore serve to get on my nerves and get on my nerves only.

    Nice thought, though.

  20. 20 Pete Ashton

We begin with nothing worthwhile but after a while we produce something of worth.

    Meaningless aphorisms are me!
