Went to see King Kong tonight with Matt.
S’alright.
Okay, it’s a very enjoyable film that I reckon is worth going to see but it didn’t quite gel for me. I’m not sure why. It wasn’t the length as I like a good long film, and it certainly wasn’t Kong which was a superb execution. It just didn’t have that oomph that a mad film about a giant monkey needs.
That said, tumbling dinosaurs – superb!
And so I can finally announce my film of the year. Sky High.
No, really. Best thing I saw at the cinema this year.
Honest!
It’s kinda sad when I have to admit the best movie I’ve seen this year is Harry Potter. Either I’m not going often enough or it really is quite a good movie. ‘Course, Quentin hasn’t made a movie this year!
Prize for the worst? The Fantastic Four by a mile. No, I didn’t choose to see it, it chose me on a flight to Canada.
I was similarly underwhelmed by Kong (see my blog). In fact it’s been a disappointing year for movies overall, with Serenity being the only one that stood out for me.
Sky High looked a lot of fun but I missed it at the cinemas.
I didn’t think much of it at the time but it kind of grew on me. The thing is that there isn’t much plot or characterisation. Really all it is is a brilliantly sustained series of set pieces about brutality, whether it’s humans brutalising one another, humans being tormented by animals, animals fighting each other, or finally, humans shooting the crap out of Kong. These set pieces are so well thought out that it almost reaches the level of a kind of philosophical view of the world – like Hobbes’ remark about life being nasty, brutish and short.
