My friend, and I know a friend of a number of people who read this, Andy Roberts has been in a serious accident. He’s stable in intensive care with a head injury and is currently being kept unconscious. Jenni Scott has more news and is keeping us posted.
I’ve known Andy for many years mainly through the small press comics scene. He’s one of those talented, intelligent, enthusiastic, passionate and generous people for whom the term “a lovely man” was created. And while that shouldn’t make a difference to how depressing this news is, it does.
You better get well soon, Andy. We kinda need you.
Update Wednesday. Andy’s daughter Sophie has written on her LJ: “He’s, in effect, dead. There is a huge unlikelyhood of him waking up, and even if he did he would probably spend the rest of his life in intensive care because of the damage that has been done.”
…
fuckfuckfuck. thanks for posting this.
I don’t know the chap but best of luck to him.
Hi Pete, I was wondering if you’d mailed around any comics people … just that Jenni and I were thinking today about who needs to know
…
This is dreadful. I’ve been out of touch with Andy for some years, but recently contacted him again via LiveJournal. My thoughts are with him.
Jeremy,
I sent a message to the BugPowder list and stuck a post on the BugPowder blog but nothing more than that.
As I said as soon as I saw this post update “Shit”
Thanks, I don’t want to burden people with superfluous an nouncements but at the same time there are people who will want to know.
i don’t know how well bad news travels – it travels well, by all accounts…
but – have Ed P, Harley, Chris Webster & contemporaries in London been told… I mailed Frank W last night… i really don’t like mailing people about it, but.. well – i feel it’s necessary
Hi Pete – sorry that such horrible news is what it takes to reconnect us with our friends in the UK. Jenni emailed us – we are saddened for our own sake and angered for Sophie’s that Andy’s life was cut short so brutally. Stupid coincidence that he died the day we celebrate Father’s Day in the US. We’re thinking of you all today.
Cruely, Father’s Day was yesterday, (19th June) but it’s not a ‘great tradition’ in this country… more a made up thing to sell cards.
Still my kids gave me cards that they made at school.
Yes, Father’s Day was Sunday here, too – I had assumed that was when it happened, because Jenni’s Saturday post, which I didn’t see until Sunday, said, “Andy died this morning.” So, they’re linked in my mind. Anytime’s a bad time to lose your dad, though, particularly at so young an age. My dad’s in his mid-70s, and I keep wondering when the inevitable will take place – I can only imagine how terrible it must be for Andy’s daughter.
