There’s a big ferris wheel thingy in Birmingham at the moment. I was walking past at dusk and took some photos.

This is the personal blog and main internet hub-thing for Pete Ashton. What you'll find here is a seemingly random collection of stuff I want to talk about and share. If you want to know where I'm coming from you could do worse than check the about page.

Yahoo Pipe
This monster sucks in all my blogs from all over the place should you fancy a bit of Pete overkill.
Twitter dump
I have a separate Twitter account, @petepump, which, if you follow, will alert you when I write a new post here or on ASH-10.com. YMMV.
Friendfeed
I'm not an active user of FF (to be honest I'm not sure how using it sustainably is possible) but if you like your social media in crack cocaine form here's all my stuff.
LiveJournal
I don't use LJ but I have readers who do. Add me to your friends list
Like most people I spread my stuff around a bit so if this blog goes quiet I'm probably burbling away somewhere else on the Internets. Here are the places you'll most likely find me. (Be aware that how I use these spaces will change over time.)
ASH-10
This is my business blog where I give advice related to social media and blogging in the hope that people will pay me to tell them more. It's working so far. It also serves to keep my witterings about social media and blogging in one place meaning if you find all that stuff deathly dull you don't have to avoid it here. And if you can't get enough of me imparting my decade-ish of experience it's all in one handy spot. Win!
Twitter
This is where most of my online social life happens. Follow me and you'll know what I'm doing and what I'm thinking. Or at least what I want you know I'm doing and thinking.
Flickr
More than 6,000 photos at the last count, some of them rather good. All my photos go here before being used elsewhere and while I'm not as active socially there as I was I do pop in to the Birmingham group occasionally.
Tumblr
My Tumblr, aka the Smursh, is probably my favourite blog as it's the most pure. A scrapbook of cool stuff I find online from videos to pictures to anything at all.
Facebook
I don't use Facebook that much, preferring the immediacy and simplicity of Twitter, but I do check in occasionally.
Last.FM
I've been scrobbling my music habits to Last.FM for years but don't really engage with the site socially too much. I do like it a lot though. Fantastic service that keeps living up to its promise.
Delicious
I recently figured out how to use Delicious properly and should blog about it really. In short, this is where I dump all the links to interesting pages I find (as opposed to videos and images which go on the Smursh). These are then syndicated to my various blogs, or not if they're not suitable. So following my Delicious isn't really necessary but using it as a tagged archive of stuff would work.
Others
Given the nature of what I do I'm always trying out new services but they tend not to stick. You can find me on MySpace, for example, but I never check in anymore. As a rule my activities spiral out from my blog to the above and then into other arenas.
Good light! Good choice of perspectives. It’s located where the fiberglass sculpture “Forward” used to be before a couple of thugs set it on fire. When April and I were in the area in November it was raining hard and the wheel was closed. It’s not as big as the London Eye but probably as big as the one in Paris.
Problem is, once you’ve seen (or in my case lived pretty much next to) the London Eye every other big wheel seems, well, not so big. I had to really think about it before aknoweldging that perhaps this Brum one actually was on the large side.
I did think as I was preparing to take the photos that the fish-barrel thing was in action. None of them were duff. Sometimes scale just does the job for you.
Love the photos. I’m hoping to take the children on the wheel on our next trip to Brum, very soon.
I agree it’s as big as the one in Paris…because it IS the one from Paris!
;o)
So the second city gets a second hand ferris wheel! I knew I had seen it somewhere before!
Meantime I see that the miscreant who accidentally set fire to “Forward” will not be brought to justice. Of course there are those who would say he did the right thing in destroying the piece. However I, for one, liked it a lot and shall miss it.
Interestingly, if you ride on this wheel you’ll notice that the recorded guide speaks in French and is talking about Paris, not Birmingham. Yes, really.
(That’s because it _is_ the one in Paris).
Nice story about the commentary. It’s good to see that changing a tape over comes under the category of “complex technical difficulties”.
the birmingham eye is wicked you shold go on it if you dont tuff luck it is wicked check it i am a year 10 student at whtc
could you let us know how much the cost will be
No idea, Emma. You probably best ask the people who run it.
its in manchester now, next to the printworks
i know we are the second city and get an second hand wheel but this its looks like we have had the front wheel this time . i went to city centre night and was very nice to see wheel with all light on .well done birmingham .
Aparently, and this is just something I heard, this one is permanent and ain’t going anwhere. The fabled Paris one is, according to my man Queso, in Manchester.
We were in Brum yesterday and the new Birmingham Wheel looks a lot better than the old (Paris) one. We went to a concert in Symphony Hall (worthy of a separate feature) and during the interval stood on the Level 4 foyer where the Wheel (in neon blue lights) was nicely framed by the steel and glass window wall of Symphony Hall. Would have made a great photo with a wide angle lens.
Trip on the Wheel costs £5, by the way.
Hi, me and my friends went on this. It was good, my friend cried on it, and me and my other friend were laughing at her. But I would recommend to go on it.
the wheel is still here. its all christmassy at the moment! i’m scared to go on it but i do really want to!
The Eye is great1 it scared my nan and my cousin from Oz loved it!
You should see the Ferris Wheel at Great Adventure here in New Jersey. I froze and couldn’t move. It takes you too high. Whooo!
Mark
