Mom bites blog

LMG points to an Onion article – Mom Finds Out About Blog, which raised a smile.

Seeing his blog through his mother’s eyes, Widmar said he knows there’s no way the site can remain unchanged. “I know Mom will instantly become the site’s most avid reader and most vocal fan,” Widmar said. “As I write it, I’ll think, ‘How would Mom feel about this?’ Even worse, I’m sure she’ll give the address to all our relatives.”

Both my parents (but neither of my step-parents) read this blog on a fairly regular basis and followers of the comments will know my dad often appears there. So I don’t have this sort of issue (or at least, if I’m writing stuff with the knowledge that my folks are reading it’s become normalised). I do wonder sometimes what it would be like without the family presence but not for long.

So, what I’m rambling towards is a question – those with blogs, do your parents know about them, and if so, do they read them? And is this a weird thing?

Yeah, my parents know but they think it’s weird. My Mum has said that she wouldn’t ever read it because it would feel like reading a private diary to her. I tell her everything anyway over the phone though, so it wouldn’t matter if she did read it :)

My Mum aint computer savvy and I have no idea where my dad is :)

Same as above with my mother – computer illiterate. Who knows about my father?

I think they’d be shocked if they read my blog. But then most people are…

Yea, my Mum does all the time, but I don’t think my brothers do. Dad? No idea, but almost certainly not.

Is this weird? No weirder than any other family interaction.

I don’t think anyone in my (vast) family knows about my journal, but they could probably find it if they looked. I wouldn’t point them at it, with the possible exception of Mum — but she’s really too busy fellwalking to faff around on the internet. I’ve probably mentioned it to my closest sister, but she’s a teacher — no time for internet stuff. Some family members, I’d not be so keen on seeing around my journal. But the internet is public, it’s the chance you take.

I do use Livejournal’s privacy features occasionally to lock out acquaintances and/or everybody. Like when I’m ranting about family issues.

I think I’d like my mum to read my blog. She’d probably complain less about my not phoning!

My parents know about my blog, but I don’t think either of them bother to read it. That seems to work out best for everyone, because they can’t accuse me of keeping secerets from them, but I don’t need to worry about them reading anything I write on it.

It’s a great way of being in touch without intruding, and without being a fussing mother. If I want to really get in touch, though, I still prefer a personal email, or phone call, or even txting…. and that’s real progress for me. Left to my own devices in the past few years, I would probably still be writing letters!

Bit late picking up on this one,(through my son’s weblog.) I think/hope it has given me some new insights and more understanding – does feel that I’m sometimes being a bit intrusive but then as has already been said, it’s there for all the world to see. Have made a couple of feeble attempts at producing my own weblog – if I ever really got into it would like to think someone else was reading it, even if it was only my own family!

I know my dad likes to look at my site, but he never really mentions it. My girlfriend’s brother seems to like it (and her boss too). My mum still wishes i’d draw something nice i think.
