Comment spam

Well, this site (along with BugPowder) is suffering from comment spam with wankers leaving link-laden comments on random posts to try and boost their google ratings. The only surprise it how long it’s taken for this phenomena to kick off and the implications are dire with commenting systems going the same way as usenet, etc.

And I don’t have the time to keep on top of it all. I’m currently reluctant to shut off comments completely though it’s a possibility.

Arsehole, the lot of them..

One upon-a-time the internet was a nice place where like minded people came together to share ideas. Then the corporations moved in a turned it into a place to sell stuff. I get deluged with spam mail, if I was on a dial-up connection rather than broadband this would be a right pain. As it is i’m happy to let mac’s mail prog sort the spam out, I really don’t want to have to change my email address.

Yes, Apple’s Mail program under OS X really does seem to help but the shear volume of spam is getting quite ridiculous and I dread to think how this is impacting families with children.

My hotmail account which is used primarily as a backup for testing started to get porn e-mails after 8 months and now gets about 2 a week. By contrast my regular e-mail address gets about 12 a day and those are the ones that get past the server’s own filter.

I wish the spammers would compile a central database like the insurance companies, then they’d see I’ve NEVER purchased anything from their adverts and they’re just wasting their time sending the rubbish.

There must be a lot of people who do, otherwise they wouldn’t bother. I wonder how many people are using herbal viagra and waiting on a penis extension (“that will rip her open!”) – hmmm. Who said romance was dead?!

“arsehole the lot of them” you say. So today I get the ultimate anal porn promotion!

Here’s an interesting question. If you “unsubscribe” (not that you “subscribed” in the first place) does this merely validate your e-mail address as active? Which then means your address is sold as part of a validated list? In other words, by doing something you have actually made things worse for yourself?

Never reply to spam or click on “unsubscribe” links – it just validates your email and you get more spam x lots. This is why the pete@bugpowder email is now dead, drowned by spam.

Interesting to see if the government do make it illegal. I can’t see how they could police it. I’m sure Hotmail release my details to companies/people. Why? If I get a lot of emails (comic lists/music lists) I tend to get next to no junk mail – if those lists have a light day, I seem to get a deluge of junk to take their place. Coincidence?

And that, my dears, is comment spam. I’ve neutered it (removed the links) so it won’t have the desired effect and left it here for posterity. Usually they get deleted within 24 hours.
